Rheumatology

Rheumatology is the medical specialty focused on diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. This system consists of joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and muscles. Rheumatologists are experts in helping patients with disorders such as arthritis, loss of motion, inflammation and swelling.

In addition to helping patients with all types of arthritis, rheumatologists are experienced in treating illnesses such as:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Sjorgren’s syndrome
  • Gout
  • Scleroderma (a disease involving connective tissue)
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica (muscle pain and stiffness, particularly in the hips and shoulders)
  • Tendinitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

There are more than 200 different types of rheumatic diseases.

TREATMENT FOR AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS

Rheumatologists also specialize in treating autoimmune conditions.

An autoimmune disease occurs when the body’s own immune system attacks healthy areas of the body. This results in painful inflammation.

Not only can autoimmune diseases affect the joints and bones, but they can also damage the eyes, nervous system, internal organs and even the skin.

WHAT SPECIAL TRAINING DOES A RHEUMATOLOGIST HAVE?

In addition to medical school and a residency, physicians interested in practicing rheumatology must enroll in a fellowship for two-to-three years. They must also pass a rigorous board examination in order to achieve board-certification.

HELP FOR ARTHRITIS AND OTHER RHEUMATIC DISEASES

We are pleased to work with Dr. Priyank Chaudhary, an experienced, board-certified rheumatologist who treats patients with these diseases.

He sees patients on a referral basis for the non-surgical evaluation and treatment of rheumatologic diseases. Please let your nurse, physician or front office staff member know if you are interested in a referral to Dr. Chaudhary.
