Joel Johnston, IT

Originally from Chapel Hill, Joel Johnston began his career in technology at just 15 years old, working at the UNC IT Response Center in 2001. After building a strong foundation in IT, he transitioned into healthcare, where his passion for improving patient care quickly became evident while serving as a referral coordinator.
“Helping patients receive expedited appointments after serious diagnoses, and seeing the gratitude from them and their families, confirmed that healthcare was where I wanted to build my career,” he said.
Today, Joel serves as the EMR Administrator for Raleigh Medical Group, where he oversees our organization’s electronic medical record system, partnering with clinical and operational teams to optimize workflows, implement new technology, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure providers have the tools they need to deliver exceptional patient care. By combining his technical expertise with his healthcare experience, Joel helps streamline clinical operations, enhance provider workflows, and improve the experience for both patients and staff.
Outside of work, Joel is an avid pizza enthusiast who enjoys perfecting homemade pizzas and exploring new pizzerias wherever he travels. He also enjoys cooking, fantasy football, video games, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He’s a proud cat dad to two calicos, Molly and Zoe, whom he’s had for nearly 10 years. Molly is happiest curled up for a nap or a cuddle, while Zoe is the mischievous one, often making surprise appearances to “help” during meetings before settling in as a lap cat each evening.
“I’m inspired by my wife and my parents,” he said. “My wife for her calm, methodical approach to life, and my parents for their unwavering willingness to help others, no matter the situation.”
A lifelong UNC fan, you’ll often find Joel cheering on the Tar Heels or attending live sporting events, including basketball, football, hockey, baseball, and soccer.
